December’s book of the month selections are “Skylight” by Nobel prize winner Jose Saramago and “Essays after Eighty” by noted poet Donald Hall. These selections were made possible from a grant by the Meredith Village Savings Bank. Saramago’s “Skylight” tells the intertwined stories of residents in a faded apartment building in Lisbon. Unpublished during the author’s life, “Skylight” “deals with the quintessential issues of life set within the simplest of circumstances (Kirkus Reviews).” Donald Hall’s “Essays after Eighty” were written after “poetry abandoned” him in his eighties. These pieces are “witty, and lyrical” and show his masterful grasp of style. The topics range from autobiographical to writing and life in New Hampshire. “By exploring the joys and vicissitudes of a long life, this work offers revealing insights into the human condition—and the grit and openness it requires (Publishers Weekly).”

Quotable“The precise role of the artist is to illuminate that darkness, so that we will not, in all our doing, lose sight of our purpose, which is to make the world a more human dwelling place.” James Baldwin
