The Yogini of Hollywood

deviThe Goddess Pose by Michelle Golberg recounts the life of Indra Devi —aristocrat, actress, and globetrotting adventuress—who helped bring yoga to the West. Born in Russia to an aristocratic family, Devi (Eugenia Peterson) fled fled the Russian revolution.  She performed in cabarets in Berlin, before traveling to India, where she persuaded the leading teacher of Hatha Yoga to accept her as a student.  Taking the name Indra Devi, she brought her practice to California, where she became a teacher to Hollywood stars.  Besides being a pioneering teacher, she demonstrated an independence which foreshadowed feminism.  “With a jeweler’s eye for detail”,   Goldberg has crafted “an elegant and richly drawn biography.”
