William McCants‘ ISIS Apocalypse does an excellent job of accounting for the rise and appeal of the ISIL movement.  The groups seemingly contradictory goals —  to bring about the immediate return of the Islamic empire and usher in  the End of Times– makes them unique among jihadist groups.  Based almost entirely on primary sources in Arabic, McCants brings insight and clarity to a difficult subject.
