irving  strangeDig deep with these meaty novels.  In Avenue of  Mysteries by John Irving,  an aging novelist on a pilgrimage to the Philippines and set on fulfilling a promise he made in his childhood to a dying friend. “Irving works his familiar themes—Catholicism, sex, death—with a light and assured touch.”   Strangeness in my Mind by Orhan Pamuk  is a sweeping epic chronicling Istanbul‘s transformation into a modern metropolis as seen through the eyes of Anatolian migrant workers. “This is a thoroughly immersive journey through Pamuk’s culturally rich yet politically volatile homeland.”
