February Books of the Month

martelJust in!  Our February Meredith Village Savings Bank February book of the month selections.  The High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Martel (The Life of Pi) is about a man who, having  lost everything, vows to find a “strange and marvelous” crucifix that resembles a chimpanzee in a church in the tiny village of Tuizelo.   Library Journal called Martel’s tale “an enjoyable journey” of “meaning and discovery.”  Native by Sayed Kashua uses vignettes on innocuous topics to illuminate what life is like for Palastinians living in Israel.  His is a “a quiet, sane voice pleading for integration of the two peoples (Kirkus Reviews).”  In January, The Stargazer’s Sister by Carrie Brown novelized the life of Caroline Herschel, a house-keeper who learned to read the night sky. And In a Different Key by John Donvan explores the  the science and the politics of autism.
