This year’s best picture award was won by Moonlight (on order), a “humane” coming-of-age drama about a young man’s struggles with bullying, sexual identity and race. It is one of the lowest-grossing films to win the BP. Fences (Denzel Washington) is an adaptation of a Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a black ball player for whom the breaking of the color barrier came too late. Hacksaw Ridge is Mel Gibson’s story about a pacifist who served as a medical corpsman during WWII. In Arrival, aliens land on earth during a global crisis (Amy Adams leads the response team). Hell or High Water, Texas bros rob banks to stave off foreclosure (not a good idea). And in Manchester by the Sea, a young man must grow up fast when be becomes the guardian of his brother’s son.
