Earthly Remains, Donna Leon’s latest Commissario Guido Brunetti case, finds the Commissario in the hospital after suffering a seizure during an interrogation. Prescribed to take some needed rest, he settles in at a villa on a sparsely inhabited island in the Venetian Lagoon. There he befriends Davide Casati, the villa’s caretaker. Casasti is concerned that the Villa’s bees are mysteriously dying. When David disappears, Brunetti naturally joins in the search. Think of this tempered case “as a vacation for your soul” (Kirkus Reviews).

Quotable“The precise role of the artist is to illuminate that darkness, so that we will not, in all our doing, lose sight of our purpose, which is to make the world a more human dwelling place.” James Baldwin
