Next up for our non-fiction book group: Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink. When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, Memorial Hospital was cut off by floodwaters and unprepared for the magnitude of the crisis. As power failed and the heat rose, untrained and exhausted caregivers were making life and death decisions. Sheri Fink “Fink, a trained physician turned journalist, is able to re-create in minute detail the sights, smells and sounds of Memorial” (USA Today). Her reporting makes for “riveting reading” that is “morally probing [but] “scrupulously fair” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). The library will have multiple copies for interested readers. The discussion will be in August (TBA).
