Hi-calorie fiction

Summer is not a time for dieting, right?  And, maybe, summer leisure hours should not all be spent on light fiction snacks when meaty reads are available!  At the outset of “Warlight” by Michael Ondaatje (The English Patient),  Nathaniel, age 14, is separated from his mother in the aftermath of World War Two.   His life is consumed with questions concerning her fate.  ”Mesmerizing from the first sentence, this novel about secrets and loss may be Ondaatje’s best work yet” (Publishers Weekly).  In “The Only Story “by Julian Barnes, we see he fading reminiscences of  an aging  man remembering his first and only love. “
