“The Desert and the Sea” by Michael Scott Moore details the author’s harrowing experience as a hostage to Somali pirates.  Visiting the Horn of Africa to write about piracy, he was kidnapped and held hostage. Moore’s   account is gripping in itself, but he also offers pertinent observations on hostage negotiations,  the causes of piracy and Islamic factions.
