This Storm” by James Elroy (“American Tabloid”) is a ‘pulse-pounding” historical crime story set in Los Angeles in the wake in Pearl Harbor. Hideo Ashida, a crime lab worker, and Navy Lieutenant Joan Conville, temporarily assigned to Aside’s team, become obsessed with finding the identity of a body discovered in a mudslide. They suspect that the murder victim is linked to an unsolved gold heist, and the hope to find the loot. Meanwhile, in “The Oracle”, Clive Cussler’s Sam and Remi Fargo are off in search of a lost Egyptian artifact with a deadly curse (no end of those, for Sam and Remi). That naturally leads to a race with rival treasure hunters that ends in a kidnapping.
