The Rationing by Charles Wheelan is a satire about a  puzzling pathogen becomes a crisis when the antidote becomes a subject scheming suppliers and political football. It’s kind of like “Outbreak meets Wag the Dog (Kirkus Reviews).”  The Tenth Muse by Catherine Chung is a drama about a women whose efforts to resolve a complex mathematical hypothesis lead her instead into  her troubled family history.
