In the midst of clashing kings and Viking raids, a monk dreams of making his abbey a center of learning. In The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline, a disgraced governess is sent to a penal colony in colonial Australia. Fifty Words for Rain by Lemmie Ash is about the illegitimate child of a Japanese aristocrat and an American GI born in the aftermath of the World War.
